Judge Orders Audit Of San Diego Diocese

Law360, New York (April 12, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a move that showed her displeasure with the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, a federal bankruptcy judge has ordered an outside accounting expert to look through the church’s financial records.

At a contempt hearing on Wednesday, Judge Louise DeCarl Adler of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in San Diego said the diocese, which filed for bankruptcy in February after being sued by more than 150 individuals who claim they were sexually abused by priests, had the “most Byzantine accounting system I’ve ever seen.”
