Refining Company Admits It Polluted Illegally

Law360, New York (April 13, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A California oil refining company that intentionally pumped contaminated wastewater into the ground and then lied about it to the government has agreed to pay a fine of $1 million and other restitution.

In a plea agreement filed Thursday with the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, the Santa Maria Refining Co., a subsidiary of Greka Energy Corp., admitted that it pumped refinery-generated wastewater into wells that were supposed to be used only for brine separated from crude oil prior to the refining process.
