Wis. State Assembly Passes Contentious Budget Bill

Law360, New York (February 25, 2011, 5:15 PM EST) -- Wisconsin's contentious budget bill restricting union collective bargaining rights cleared its first hurdle early Friday morning when it passed the state assembly, over the shouts of Democrats who wanted to continue debate.

The assembly speaker cut off debate at 1:05 a.m. and held a snap vote on the legislation, a move that brought Democrats to their feet, booing and shouting, “Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker!”

The legislation passed by a 51-17 vote within seconds, and will move to the state Senate for further consideration.
