Texas Lawmakers Seek End To Austin Energy Monopoly

Law360, New York (March 3, 2011, 8:08 PM EST) -- Texas lawmakers last week threatened to end Austin Energy's monopoly after the city-owned electric utility said it would raise base electric rates for the first time in 17 years.

Texas Sen. Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls, and Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, R-Kerrville, introduced legislation on Feb. 24 that would force the city of Austin to deregulate its electric utility market within a year.
