South Florida Trustee Charged With $16M Fraud

Law360, New York (March 4, 2011, 1:09 PM EST) -- A longtime bankruptcy trustee was charged Thursday in a Florida federal court with misappropriating more than $16 million in cases she was overseeing, and losing — or possibly pocketing — at least $2.4 million in the process.

Marika Tolz, who for more than 20 years served as a receiver and liquidation trustee in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida, wrote unauthorized checks from bankruptcy accounts to enrich herself and cover money misappropriated from other accounts, according to prosecutors.
