Police Officers Say Political Affilation Led To Demotion

Law360, New York (April 19, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Six police officers have filed a lawsuit, claiming their constitutional rights were violated when they were demoted or transferred after they supported a candidate who failed to unseat incumbent Jose Torres in Paterson, N.J.’s 2006 mayoral election.

The officers filed suit on Wednesday against the City of Paterson, Mayor Jose Torres, and Paterson’s Police Chief James Wittig and Police Director Michael Walker, contending their backing of former Paterson Police Chief Lawrence Spagnola in his unsuccessful bid for the mayor’s office led to retaliation.
