Senate Bill Looks To Boost Smaller Nuclear Reactors

Law360, New York (March 9, 2011, 2:07 PM EST) -- Sens. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M.; Mark Udall, D-Colo.; and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, on Tuesday introduced a bill intended to spur the development of small modular nuclear reactors by authorizing the government to develop a standard design through public-private partnerships.

S.512, titled the Nuclear Power 2021 Act, authorizes the U.S. Secretary of Energy to develop a standard design for two types of low-cost modular reactors through public-private partnerships and to obtain operating licenses for the reactors from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission by 2021.
