GOP To Block Commerce Nominee Over Trade Deals

Law360, New York (March 14, 2011, 7:11 PM EDT) -- Republicans in the U.S. Senate said on Monday they will block any nominee for secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce put forward by President Barack Obama until he sends free trade deals with Colombia and Panama to Congress for approval.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and 43 other GOP lawmakers said in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., they were prompted to act by “the president’s apparent lack of interest" in the two trade pacts.
