Ex-NYC Council President Avoids Jail For Tax Misstep

Law360, New York (March 15, 2011, 4:52 PM EDT) -- Former New York City Council President Andrew Stein avoided jail time Tuesday over his failure to pay 2008 income taxes, but he was sentenced to three years of probation and 500 hours of community service.

Stein, 66, was also ordered by Magistrate Judge Ronald L. Ellis of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to file accurate amended returns and pay past taxes due and owing on a plan negotiated with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.
