Insurer Hit With $19M Verdict Over Hospital Coverage

Law360, New York (March 17, 2011, 6:48 PM EDT) -- A California jury hit Stonebridge Life Insurance Co. on Wednesday with $19 million in punitive damages for deeming a paraplegic former marine's 109-day hospital stay medically unnecessary and denying him coverage, according to an attorney for the plaintiff.

A jury in the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles, also awarded the plaintiff, Thomas Nickerson, $35,000 for mental and emotional distress, his attorney William Shernoff of Shernoff Bidart Echeverria LLP said.
