FTC OK's Tribune Sale, But Bigger Hurdles Expected

Law360 (April 24, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission has given its approval to real estate magnate Sam Zell’s $8.2 billion bid to buy the troubled Tribune Co., but the proposed sale still has tall hurdles to clear before gaining a regulatory green light.

The FTC granted an early termination notice on Friday, which indicates that the agency and the U.S. Department of Justice have reviewed the proposed deal for Tribune, which owns a slew of newspapers and television and radio stations, and concluded that it does not pose competitive risks....
