Drill Pipe Blocked Deepwater Blowout Preventer: Report

Law360, New York (March 23, 2011, 3:51 PM EDT) -- A trapped piece of drill pipe kept the blowout preventer on the doomed BP PLC-operated Deepwater Horizon oil rig from sealing off a rush of well fluid, a federally sponsored audit released Wednesday said.

The technical analysis of the blowout preventer from the Deepwater Horizon rig — prepared by contractor Det Norske Veritas for a federal task force investigating the causes of the ensuing oil spill — found that a portion of the drill pipe cross section became trapped in the mechanism's ram block faces....
