EU Court Says Steel Cos. Must Pay €13M Cartel Fines

Law360, New York (March 29, 2011, 3:05 PM EDT) -- The European Union's highest court refused to overturn more than €13 million ($18.3 million) in fines against units of ArcelorMittal and ThyssenKrupp AG for their alleged roles in two steel cartels more than 15 years ago.

In a pair of decisions, the European Court of Justice ruled that the European Commission did not overreach its authority in applying a combination of new and expired laws to reimpose penalties of €10 million on ArcelorMittal Luxembourg SA and €3.17 million on ThyssenKrupp Nirosta GmbH after lower courts tossed...
