Court Affirms Invalidity Of Calgon Carbon UV Patents

Law360 (April 27, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- An appellate court on Thursday affirmed a lower court’s findings that two patents for ultraviolet light water purification were invalid because the patents’ claims were anticipated by prior art.

In affirming a June 2006 ruling by the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit acknowledged that two patents held by Calgon Carbon Corp. are invalid. The decision puts to rest a six-year dispute between Calgon Carbon and competitor Wedeco UV Technologies Inc.
