EU Fines Unilever, P&G €315M For Detergent Cartel

Law360, New York (April 13, 2011, 12:38 PM EDT) -- The European Union's antitrust watchdog on Wednesday fined Unilever PLC and Procter & Gamble Co. €315.2 million ($456.2 million) for running a three-year cartel for household powder laundry detergents.

P&G received a €211.2 million penalty, while the European Commission hit Unilever with a €104 million fine. Both companies received substantial reductions, of 50 percent and 25 percent, respectively, under the regulator's leniency program, as well as 10 percent reductions for agreeing to admit to the conduct and settle with the commission.
