Judge Severs Claim To Speed Up $18B Chevron Suit

Law360, New York (April 15, 2011, 6:56 PM EDT) -- A New York federal judge agreed Friday to separately determine whether an Ecuadorean court's $18 billion judgment against Chevron Corp. for alleged pollution in the Amazon is enforceable, saying a drawn-out trial on the question could irreparably harm Chevron.

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York granted Chevron's motion to bifurcate its declaratory judgment claim for expedited discovery and trial but reserved the right to make changes to the order to ensure fairness.
