Funeral Trust Bilked $14M From Customers: Calif. AG

Law360, New York (April 19, 2011, 4:21 PM EDT) -- A major California funeral trust came under fire from the state's attorney general Monday in a new action alleging the trust conspired to divert $14 million from funds intended for consumers who had paid for funeral services.

The California Master Trust, which pooled the funds of more than 27,000 California consumers who prepaid for funerals for themselves or loved ones, engaged in conspiracy and kickbacks, according to California Attorney General Kamala Harris's complaint against the trust and numerous banks, funeral companies and funeral industry associations....
