Calif. Calls On Blue Shield To Explain 38% Rate Hike

Law360, New York (April 21, 2011, 6:25 PM EDT) -- The California Department of Managed Health Care on Monday asked Blue Shield of California to explain calculations behind two recent rates increases that together hiked rates by 37.5 percent on average for 70,000 individual health insurance policyholders.

In a letter to Blue Shield, the DMHC said it was extremely concerned about how the double-digit rate increases that respectively took effect on Oct. 1 and Jan. 1 would impact consumers and their ability to continue coverage, especially in the current economic climate.
