MetLife Subpoenaed In Calif. Benefits Probe

Law360, New York (April 25, 2011, 8:45 PM EDT) -- MetLife Inc. was subpoenaed Monday by California’s insurance regulator as part of a probe into the insurer's payment practices under its life insurance policies.

The investigation is a result of preliminary findings from an audit the state controller launched in 2008 indicating that for two decades, MetLife failed to pay life insurance benefits to named beneficiaries or the state even after learning that an insured had died, California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones and State Controller John Chiang said.
