New Medicare Program Rewards Hospitals For Performance

Law360, New York (April 29, 2011, 6:40 PM EDT) -- Medicare will soon pay more than 3,500 hospitals nationwide based on the quality of their inpatient acute care services and not just the quantity, under a final rule that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued Friday.

Federal officials believe the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing program and its performance-based incentive payments, established under last year's Affordable Care Act, will improve care for senior citizens while helping to decrease medical costs. The program takes effect in October 2012.
