Enviros Launch Climate Change Suits Against US, States
Law360 (May 4, 2011, 4:06 PM EDT) -- The federal government and all 50 states were hit with legal actions Wednesday in California federal court and several state courts alleging the public trust doctrine required them to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and implement reforestation programs in order to fight climate change.
The U.S. was sued in California federal court and 10 other cases were filed in state court, whereas remaining defendant states received either notice letters or petitions for agency rulemakings, according to Julia Olson, executive director of Our Children's Trust, which organized the legal campaign in conjunction with youth group iMatter.
