Fed. Circ. Invalidates Toolbar Patent In Microsoft Suit

Law360, New York (May 4, 2011, 5:01 PM EDT) -- The Federal Circuit on Wednesday affirmed a lower court's ruling invalidating a patent for software toolbar technology that Microsoft Corp. was accused of infringing.

Inventor Gary Odom's patent covers a method for manipulating the tools within a toolbar in a software application, such as allowing users to hide tools if they don't want them to be displayed by moving around dividers on the screen. He sued Microsoft in 2008, alleging that the company's Office line of software infringed the patent.
