Massey Offers $87M To Settle W.Va. Miner Death Suits

Law360, New York (May 4, 2011, 7:59 PM EDT) -- Massey Energy Co. has offered $3 million to each of the families of 29 miners killed in a West Virginia coal mine explosion last year, according to a Friday regulatory filing on its proposed acquisition of another company.

Seven of the 29 families have signed agreements to resolve their claims and four settlements have been approved by West Virginia courts, Massey said in a proxy statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
