EPA Urges Higher Standards For Chicago Rivers

Law360, New York (May 12, 2011, 2:49 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency told Illinois regulators Thursday to tighten up water quality standards for parts of the Chicago and Calumet Rivers to protect the health of those who increasingly head there for activities like kayaking and jet skiing.

The EPA said the revised standards would likely require the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to once again begin disinfecting sewage discharged into the waterway system from its North Side and Calumet treatment plants.
