FCC Should Reform Merger Reviews: House Panel

Law360, New York (May 13, 2011, 5:08 PM EDT) -- The Federal Communications Commission should stop pressuring companies to accept broad conditions in order to win approval of proposed mergers, Republicans on a U.S. House panel told agency commissioners at a hearing Friday on reforming the agency.

Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., chairman of the House subcommittee on communications and technology, said at the hearing that the FCC's transaction review standards are "vague and susceptible to abuse" and have been used to institute industrywide changes under the guise of approving a single merger.
