NY Health Chief Issues State Ban On Bath Salts

Law360, New York (May 24, 2011, 6:06 PM EDT) -- New York State Health Commissioner Nirav Shah on Monday banned the sale of substances marketed as bath salts that can mimic the effects of cocaine and amphetamines when ingested.

Shah issued an order immediately prohibiting the sale and distribution of the products, which are sold in convenience stores and online.

Shah said the products are marketed as bath salts to conceal their true purpose. They reportedly cause hallucinations, paranoia, delusions and violent behavior, and also has led to hundreds of hospitalizations around the country.
