Texas Senate OKs Bill To Reform State-Backed Insurer

Law360, New York (May 25, 2011, 8:07 PM EDT) -- The Texas Senate approved a bill Monday aimed at reforming the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, though it will have to be reconciled with a version that passed through the state House of Representatives that critics have called unfriendly to taxpayers.

TWIA, a government-established insurer for homeowners in hurricane-prone coastal areas, was harshly criticized — and was sued — for its actions in the wake of Hurricane Ike, which in 2008 devastated the Gulf of Mexico coastline and many islands in the Caribbean.
