Ex-Massey Chair Says Mine Blast Was 'Natural Disaster'

Law360, New York (June 3, 2011, 8:24 PM EDT) -- The former chairman of Massey Energy Co. said Friday that the deadly April 2010 explosion at the company's Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia was a “natural disaster” and criticized federal mine safety officials for ignoring important evidence.

Evidence suggests that a buildup of natural gas led to the explosion that killed 29 miners at the Montcoal, W.Va., mine, former Massey Chairman Bobby R. Inman said in a 169-page preliminary report.
