Chiquita Can't Get Colombian War Crimes Suits Tossed

Law360, New York (June 3, 2011, 11:17 PM EDT) -- A federal judge in Florida on Friday refused to toss claims against Chiquita Brands International Inc. in multidistrict litigation brought by relatives of people allegedly tortured and killed by a Colombian paramilitary group paid to provide security on its banana farms.

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra of the Southern District of Florida said that seven complaints filed by thousands of plaintiffs had sufficiently alleged that through Chiquita's payments to the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia, a right-wing paramilitary group that combated left-wing guerrillas, the company was liable...
