11th Circ. Must Ban Shell's Gulf Drilling, Groups Say

Law360, New York (June 9, 2011, 6:13 PM EDT) -- Seven conservation groups asked the Eleventh Circuit on Thursday to block Shell Oil Co. from conducting deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, arguing operations could result in an oil spill 10 times bigger than last year's Deepwater Horizon disaster.

The groups filed two petitions challenging the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement's approval of Shell's drilling plans off the Alabama coast in waters 2,000 feet deeper than BP PLC's Deepwater Horizon.
