OSHA Bill Aims To Guard Gov't Workers, Whistleblowers

Law360, New York (June 10, 2011, 4:49 PM EDT) -- Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., reintroduced a bill Thursday that would amend the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 to cover federal, state and local government employees and increase protections for whistleblowers.

The Protecting America's Workers Act would also improve Occupational Safety and Health Administration reporting, inspection and enforcement by increasing penalties for employers who violate safety laws, according to Murray.

In a speech on the Senate floor on Thursday, Murray said there were 4,340 workplace deaths in the U.S. in 2009 alone.
