Sens. Ask GAO To Examine NRC Reactor Oversight

Law360, New York (June 22, 2011, 1:33 PM EDT) -- Sens. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., called Tuesday for a U.S. Government Accountability Office investigation into the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s oversight of aging reactors, citing a news report that said the commission had weakened safety standards to increase compliance.

The senators expressed "grave concern" over the allegations in a letter to GAO head Gene Dodaro, saying that the recent meltdown of Japanese reactors in Fukushima required stricter — not looser — oversight of the 104 nuclear power plants in the U.S.
