Simon Used Strong-Arm Tactics Against Retailers: Suit

Law360, San Diego (July 1, 2011, 6:42 PM EDT) -- Gumwood HP Shopping Partners LP filed an antitrust suit Wednesday in Indiana alleging Simon Property Group Inc. used anti-competitive tactics to prevent key retailers like Ann Taylor Stores Corp. from following through with lease agreements with Gumwood.

Gumwood claims that Simon improperly used its clout as the largest public U.S. real estate firm to interfere with Gumwood’s deals with retailers to open stores at lifestyle shopping center Heritage Square in Mishawaka, Ind., because the center was poised to compete with Simon’s super-regional mall in the area....
