DC Circ. Says Indonesian Villagers Can Sue Exxon

Law360, New York (July 8, 2011, 5:45 PM EDT) -- The D.C. Circuit on Friday resurrected a suit alleging Exxon Mobil Corp.'s security forces tortured and killed villagers near its gas fields in Indonesia, saying a lower court erred when it ruled the plaintiffs lacked standing to sue as nonresident aliens.

In a 2-1 decision, the appeals panel said the Indonesian villagers could bring claims under the Alien Tort Statute and that Exxon was not immune from aiding and abetting liability under the law.
