Online Storage Co. Dropbox Faces Trademark Suit

Law360, New York (July 8, 2011, 7:14 PM EDT) -- California cloud storage service Dropbox Inc. was sued in late June in Texas by a rival technology company claiming it really owns the name “dropbox.”

Irving, Texas-based Officeware Corp., which runs a website called Filesanywhere.com, said in a June 30 complaint that Dropbox had violated the Lanham Act by calling itself and its service Dropbox.

Officeware argues that it has used the word “dropbox” since 2004 to describe a feature in its own service, which allows users to store files online.
