Big Farms Getting Unfair Power Subsidies: Study

Law360, New York (May 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Big agriculture operations in California are paying next to nothing for the electricity they use to pump more than 2 trillion gallons of water into their fields, thanks to over $100 million in federal subsidies, a study has found.

The study, released on Wednesday by environmental watchdog Environmental Working Group, said that even as California's power customers were reeling from blackouts and soaring power prices, 7,000 of the nation's largest and richest farms were paying unnaturally low prices not affected by the volatile energy market....
