FDNY Exams Must Include Demographic Data, Judge Rules

Law360, Los Angeles (July 14, 2011, 9:55 PM EDT) -- A federal judge ruled Wednesday that New York City's revised firefighter entrance exam must include race, ethnicity and gender data to prevent discrimination against minorities, continuing the city's effort to overhaul the old exam which allegedly prejudiced black applicants.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis said collecting the demographic data would ensure that the FDNY's current hiring practices were in compliance with federal and state anti-discrimination law.
