HHS Lacks Tools To Fight Medicare Waste: Officials

Law360, New York (July 28, 2011, 3:59 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services lacks the tools to reduce and recover improper Medicare payments, which totaled a staggering $48 billion last year, federal officials told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in a hearing Thursday.

Despite some progress, HHS’ Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is still struggling to develop internal controls that would help rein in unnecessary overpayments and identify fraud, said officials from HHS and the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
