Greens Can't Sue DOD For Oil Sands Purchases: Judge

Law360, New York (August 3, 2011, 7:32 PM EDT) -- A Virginia federal judge on Friday threw out a suit challenging the U.S. Department of Defense's acquisition of oil made from Canadian oil sands, ruling that two environmental groups had no standing to sue.

The Sierra Club and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy's alleged injuries, which stemmed from global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions, were much too broad to be actionable, U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton ruled.
