St. Louis Settles CAA Sewer Suit For $4.7B

Law360, New York (August 4, 2011, 7:12 PM EDT) -- The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District agreed Thursday to spend about $4.7 billion in upgrades to its sewer system to end a suit in Missouri federal court alleging violations of the Clean Water Act.

The upgrades will improve sewer pipes and treatment plants, eliminate illegal overflows of untreated raw sewage, including basement backups, and to reduce pollution levels in urban rivers and streams, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday.
