Ex-NY Lawmaker Can't Escape Fraud Case

Law360, New York (August 4, 2011, 5:08 PM EDT) -- A New York federal judge on Thursday refused to dismiss a two-count indictment against Hiram Monserrate, the former state senator accused of funneling $300,000 in public money to a nonprofit that helped his failed 2006 bid for a Democratic nomination.

While still a New York City councilor, Monserrate allegedly directed money from a discretionary spending account to a group called Latino Initiative for Better Resources and Empowerment Inc., or LIBRE, according to an indictment unsealed in October.
