Obama Unveils New Fuel, GHG Rules For Heavy Vehicles

Law360, New York (August 9, 2011, 4:48 PM EDT) -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced new standards to increase fuel efficiency and cut greenhouse gas emissions from big rigs, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles, with some vehicles required to meet emissions and fuel consumption reductions of about 20 percent by 2018.

The combined standards, which impose steadily increasing requirements for model year 2014 through 2018 vehicles, are expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 270 million metric tons and save roughly 530 million barrels of oil, according to the White House. The estimated net benefits...
