H&R Block To Pay $9.8M To End Mortgage Bias Suit

Law360, Washington (August 9, 2011, 3:01 PM EDT) -- H&R Block Inc. agreed Monday to shell out $9.8 million and change the terms of $115 million worth of home loans as part of a settlement of the Massachusetts attorney general's claims that the company targeted black and Hispanic borrowers with marketing that pushed the sale of predatory products.

Massachusetts also claimed that H&R Block and its Option One Mortgage Corp. unit, now known as Sand Canyon Corp., engaged in unfair and deceptive conduct on a broad scale by selling risky loan products that the companies...
