Schumer Calls For Background Checks On Utility Workers

Law360, New York (August 15, 2011, 6:14 PM EDT) -- Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., announced Sunday that he planned to introduce a bill requiring major utility plants to perform FBI background checks on certain employees, saying the measure was necessary in order to thwart threats posed by terrorism.

The legislation would mandate that workers at electric, gas and water utilities who have access to the facilities' most sensitive areas undergo the same review currently required for nuclear power plant workers with similarly high levels of access, according to the senator.
