Philly Papers Settles Superfund Claim

Law360, New York (August 15, 2011, 5:28 PM EDT) -- The liquidation trust of Philadelphia Newspapers LLC has agreed to pay more than $650,000 to settle its part of a $17.8 million cleanup claim over the Swope Oil Superfund site in New Jersey, according to a motion filed Friday in Pennsylvania federal court.

The agreement settles the bankruptcy claim brought by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which alleged Philadelphia Newspapers and other liable parties owed it for capping the Swope Oil site in Pennshauken, N.J., and removing toxin-laden soil in the early 1990s. The publishing company...
