Abbott Hit With 2 Suits Over Depakote Birth Defects

Law360, New York (August 15, 2011, 10:26 PM EDT) -- Abbott Laboratories Inc. was slapped with two suits Monday in Illinois court alleging its anti-seizure medication Depakote caused birth defects in children whose mothers ingested the drug early in their pregnancy.

A group of four dozen minors and several adults are plaintiffs in the suits against Abbott, accusing the pharmaceutical company of downplaying and concealing from physicians the birth defect risks associated with the drug.
