US Sanctions Syria, Bans Petroleum Imports

Law360, New York (August 18, 2011, 2:09 PM EDT) -- The U.S. on Thursday imposed harsh new sanctions on Syria, including a ban on imports of Syrian-origin petroleum or petroleum products, in an effort to force the country's president, Bashar al-Assad, to step down.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order requiring the immediate freeze of any Syrian government assets in U.S. jurisdiction, prohibiting Syrian petroleum imports and barring U.S. nationals from having any dealings related to Syria’s petroleum or otherwise operating or investing in Syria.
