Maersk Wins New Trial In Transocean Drilling Patent Case

Law360, New York (August 19, 2011, 6:39 PM EDT) -- Two months after tossing a $15 million jury verdict against Maersk Contractors USA Inc., a Texas federal judge on Thursday granted the container ship giant's motion for a new trial in its dispute with Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling Inc. over patents covering drilling technology.

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt conditionally granted Maersk’s request for a new patent infringement trial on the grounds that Transocean should have been barred from presenting expert testimony and other evidence on the issue of obviousness.
