Smithfield Reaches Deal With US In Immigration Bias Suit

Law360, New York (August 22, 2011, 6:37 PM EDT) -- A Missouri-based Smithfield Foods Inc. subsidiary has agreed to drop its allegedly high bar for determining employment eligibility to settle a suit accusing the pork producer of discriminating against immigrant hires, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Monday.

Farmland Foods Inc., headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., was sued in June after a DOJ investigation at a Monmouth, Ill., plant showed that the pork producer required newly hired non-U.S. and naturalized foreign-born citizens to show specific and, in many cases, extra work authorization documents.
