LivingSocial Suits Over Expired Deals Merged Into MDL

Law360, New York (August 24, 2011, 5:58 PM EDT) -- Five proposed class actions accusing LivingSocial Inc. of breaking consumer protection laws that prohibit the expiration of gift certificates were consolidated Monday into multidistrict litigation in Washington federal court.

Washington-based LivingSocial, whose corporate name is Hungry Machine Inc., asked to consolidate the cases there and the five plaintiffs agreed.

LivingSocial is one of the largest companies that offer group coupons online. Customers purchase the deals, which amount to gift certificates, at a discount. For example, the company may offer a $50 meal at a local restaurant...
